only I've been singing "today is going to be the day you hear somebody say we need you wide awake ...
I'm certain my somebody was the eagle.
Eagles, three, flew overhead. Around and around, dispelling summer's somnolence that had
settled deep inside my head. The eagles flew the blue sky away in its place they left my favourite shade of marbled grey.
Alert at last I awaited that low, familiar but still unplaced whistle
It beckoned me to stand beneath the tree of hand and beak. There I held my breath whilst my eyes searched amongst silhouettes.
The Hawk turned away her crested head, she and I have once before met. She is wise having held my naked hazel eyes within her powerful citrine gaze. She knows them to be inferior.
On that second meeting I hand held my third eye and watched her dip and dive between the trees
Always returning to one particular treeWhere upon separate branches, her twin offspring watched and waited
(Pacific Baza also known as Crested Hawk or Pacific Cuckoo-Falcon)
And all around tall skinny saplings began to sway with slow metronomic rhythm.
Revealing what I had missed when I paused beneath the tree of hand and beak
Goanna's leathery skin would not receive morning's solar kiss
From behind me in another tree the three young crows declared rain was about to fall. Instantly the smell of ozone hit and so I turned and ran my third eye home.
The sky wore blue the following morning
and Goanna received its solar kiss
whilst two crows companionably chattered as they groomed their wet white feathers black.
I once saw an eagle in India. It was doing that thing where it somehow stayed "perched" wings outstretched, not flapping them, hundreds of foot up in the mid air over the beach, probably riding the seabreeze, not moving at all, just hanging in the air, looking white-headed and huge and amazing! That was in Goa. An eagle with good taste for holiday destinations in my view!!
Lori - I didn't see signs of a nest, but I think they might have roosted in that spot overnight. The young ones were quite big with not much downy feathering left. I couldn't believe I'd missed seeing that Goanna when I walked under the tree but then my mind and eye were looking for a bird so they probably saw it and dismissed it for not being a bird ;) I'd hoped it would be out of that hollow the next morning and it was already there soaking up the early morning sun. I've been checking that branch but haven't seen it since, they move around a bit so its probably been watching me from another tree*!*
Gleds - agree, them birds know all the best destinations. We watched a pair of sea eagles catching their food in Hong Kong harbour. Those tall buildings must make great vantage points. Just wonderful to watch them hovering*!*
Amanda - They are impressively magnificent aren't they :)
This reads like really beautiful poetry...I was completely captivated throughout the whole thing. Isn't it the greatest of joys to watch Eagles fly, around and about and above, listening to their squeals. Each time I think of the ones who have gone before me, wondering if their souls have the pleasure of such stimulating flight! Lovely, lovely post...thank you!
I met a cockatoo in a petshop the other day. He kept turning his head upside down and saying hello. The owner was saying it costs over £1000 which is $2500, isn'tit? Forwhat is an agricultural pest down under! That's what I remember thinking when I bought my 2 Siberian Swines (not the 3 robos)back from the petshop I was thinking "hey I spent £20 on 2 agricultural pests!"
Marion - I've been catching quite regular glimpses of the three eagles - I think they must be a pair plus their young one. It's amazing how soon you can lose sight of them*!*
Gleds - More like $1500 our dollar's a bit stronger at the moment. Those beaks can do quite a bit of damage to crops and trees and buildings at times too*!*
I heard the swines will vandalize your living room, breaking up your coffee table if you don't punish them in a cage when you go out shopping. The little bastards!
A wonderful post..thank you for sharing your words and the music video set the stage.I'm Cat,visiting from Amanda, and its a real pleasure to know you.Warmest Regards,Cat
G'Day, I listened to the song, it is pretty and calming but her pets looked a bit stuffed. Not like your free birdies. We don't get that sort of hawk around here. Pretty little blokes aren't they.

Gleds, think I'd be damaging more than coffee tables if I was a cocky in a cage ;)
Hello Cat, always lovely to have someone new to me leave a greeting*!*
