Do you suppose they've been playing some sort of avian relay game with me, five groups of four plus two refs?
Magpies are very territorial but so far there are no signs of disputes other than the younger ones getting a peck whenever they step out of line. So I'm guessing it must be some sort of extended family gathering and hopefully no one will outstay their welcome. We seem to be on a steady count of eighteen at the moment.
Two for joy
Three for a girl
Four for a boy
Five for silver
Six for gold
Seven for a secret never to be told
Eight for a wish
Nine for a kiss
Ten a surprise you should be careful not to miss
Eleven for health
Twelve for wealth
Thirteen beware it's the devil himself.
(old superstitious rhyme)
Ol' Captain Devil has had me stuck fast in the doldrums; floundering, not drowning aboard his ship of Distractions. Hopefully I can catch an energising beam or two from tonight's full moon and reset my passage.

15 Good eggs say hi *!*:
Oh, I've been missing you and your lovely posts! I'm glad you are back. And it looks to me as if you were not distracted at all, but rather that you were concentrating your photo-taking energies to make them even more potent. Wonderful!
it's a magpie festival!!
good to hear from you annie - i missed you!! wishing you blessings and new starts with this full moon - if it's anything like it appeared here last night, it will be brilliant!
xo
Aww I'm sorry I haven't been in touch. Perhaps you forgot to doff your hat to the magpie. Good luck to do so you know. Was the moon as gorgeous up your way as it was here last night? Huge harvest moon. Very spectacular.
Jodi - yes one of the distractions gave me an added reason to keep my camera company :)
Amanda - It was nice and luminous, fingers are crossed for that beam to work some magic*!*
Baino - I always make sure I say hello to the maggies - maybe I've been saying it too loudly ;)
I was thinking of you just the other day and wondering what was keeping you from your blog! aha distractions... yes lots of those around. Glad youre back!
So glad you're back Annie. Those magpies are really something. I don't think I've ever seen so many together in one place. Thank you for the poem; I've wanted the complete lines for ages. Bits always run through my mind when I see a collection of magpies.
annie, oh these black and white photos. i love them.
i;ve missed you and i'm glad to be here. i have never seen a magpie. are there magpies in new england? they are kind of grouchy, right?
:^)
Bloody hell that's a lot of magpies!
You are so lucky to have that many magpies to watch. They've certainly inspired your photography muse. I love the photo of the feathers...beautifully done!
Take care of yourself during your time of distraction..xo
Thanks Krissie :)
Elsie, I know what you mean some lines are easier to remember, I don't think I ever got past six*!*
Kj, I've missed being amongst you all. These Magpies have a bit of a stern stare and with their red eyes they can be a little unnerving to some*!*
Not bloody wrong Gleds ;)
Marion, it's funny when you see them in a group you soon start noticing their little differences and characteristics :)
How amazing - all those magpies! I love em.
I've been missing you Annie. So glad I stopped in to catch up and find you have posted again. Love the Magpie reunion in your backyard. Here is a bit of my spring reaching out to you to pull you out of the doldrums.
Hugs,
Annie
Obviously the writer of the old rhyme didn't envisage close to 20 birds! Obviously a family gathering. Was it very noisy?
Hope the moon did it's trick. It was beautiful, when I saw it.
Stoneweaver - They must have quite a bit of family gossip to catch up on - they don't seem to be in any hurry to end their visit ;)
Annie - Smiles and Thank you*!*
Hg - They were fairly quiet when they first arrived but now a few of them are breaking into their song, so it's quite nice to hear the volume turned up*!*
Annie... come over as I have a big bird surprise... met him at the beach xx Robyn
