Nature's allsorts

Red and some of the other birds I associate with the arrival of our wet weather arrived within days of each other. They brought thunderstorms and high winds and lots of calling to and fro for their partners to make ready their chosen nests. Soon the insects will be abundant and birds will be running and swooping to catch them for their demanding chicks. The air is heavy and sweet from the nectar laden flowering trees, the grass is green and thickening, the trees are swollen and upright... and this is what I've seen...

No not a giant egg but a soccer ball that had been wedged
up a tree for the past decade
noisy birds
wet birds
nest building birds
Tiny birds
Blushing pink birds
Birds supervising the restoration and resiting of feeding station
Shy turkey bird on the run
Water birds with Wallaby
Wallaby with friend
Wallaby with her joey
Wallaby want to be Hare
Possie Possum and her latest joey - 1 month older in
3rd photo and beating mum to the treats
A first for me - big thrill. Heard and seen before but never
been close enough for the camera.
I think it's a Squirrel Glider, if I'm wrong then it's a
Sugar Glider which is the smaller of the two
Honey spread upon a piece of bread is the attraction here.
Red has been back and with his partner in tow
She showed no signs of nervousness in following him over to me
so I'm thinking Red must have been happy with her nesting
and chick rearing skills from last season.

I've been rereading some of my favourite tales of mysterious imaginings of the spooky order and it seems my unquiet thoughts gathered and rearranged themselves in the woods for me to capture.

Tell me do, what sees you afore all shall be revealed come several turns o' the moon?

Don't ask! but looks like a devilishly good time was being had...

21 Good eggs say hi *!*:

Heard here youve had tons of rain!
Turkey birds..didnt know you had those where you are,... what do they do? and do they like to come up close?

Bimbimbie said...

Usually see one or two of them wandering about after the first decent bit of rain. Must be on the look out for a mate and somewhere suitable to build their mound, something they haven't done around here as far as I can tell that is.

This one was quite close to the house and I had enough time to grab the camera before it ran off*!*

So much activity in your part of the world Annie. The birds are lovely to watch. Pretty busy down here too but not so colourful. I love those scarey eyes - I'm guessing they belong to your little cat. A perfect Halloween picture eh?

Elsie those eyes don't belong to Inkie the black cat, who I think is planning on sleeping through tonight's shifting shadows*!*

Whoa, so many excellent photos!! I especially liked the wet bird and the possums. I have never yet seen a possum... my husband says they are awfully mean, and best not seen... but they still seem fascinating to me. Anyway, it sounds like it must be lovely where you are with all the flowers beginning to bloom!

And since you asked...

A grouchy old man staring around a tree... but logically, I think it must be feathers on the back of a bird.

One of those evil weezels or weevels of whatever they were called, which were so creepy in "Dumbo". Sorry!

A very thin crow looking upwards... but maybe it's a dragonfly?

A red eyed baby owl looking upwards?

And a Happy Halloween to you!

Haha I'm hoping your husband is referring to the American possum - others have commented that our Australian ones are better looking, less scarier ;)

... you have a no amongst a yes and a maybe*!*

Awwww Red brought his girl over!! XD

How lucky are you to have all that nature so close!

Bimbimbie said...

I'm looking forward to them bringing their little ones in a month or two if all goes to plan ... and yes I pinch myself daily so as not to take all these visitors for granted*!*

such incredible creatures ~ you live in the midst of a glorious zoo, annie!

p.s. congrats on your well-deserved win over at 10thdom!!

Yesterday it felt like I'd been locked inside a parrot house - there was some sort of cockatoo relay race going on around the tops of the trees - thankfully they have moved on today (fingers crossed) ;)

My friend had a cockatiel...such interesting and friendly birds or at least his was! But to see them in the wild like this would be so astonishing to me.

Love those turkey birds! Oh, and the wallaby...I am bowled over by the amount of wildlife where you live that allows you to photograph them. Love visiting here...xx

It's raining here too but alas, that is where the resemblance ends. The birdies are safely in the tops of the trees and hidden away. Even when they are in the backyard, they are so shy. There isn't a bold one in the bunch.

I'm happy to see Red back and with a lady friend too. And all the joeys! Wow, it's family rearing time.

So good to see your birds are still flocking to you! even with the horrid sounding weather..
I am looking forward to winter and time for good books!

O wow those photos are particularly amazing. You know I really thought that football was a giant egg and was wondering what on earth could have laid it there? ... except maybe an emu. They're Aussie, aren't they?

I haven't been online for over a week which is a long time for me so I'm just dropping by to say hi and I hope all is good with you...

I forgot to ask you: do you know the type of cockatoo that has a high white tiara on top of its head that it shakes to stand up when it's showing off? They tend to be sold in the international pet trade. I don't think I've ever seen a sulphur crested one in captivity. Do you ever get these tiara cockatoos in your garden?

PS come and see my macaws today. They're gorgeous ;-)

I saw a photo of a kookaburra EATING a dead lorikeet in the Sun newspaper last week. I was trying to find the link for my blog but haven't located it yet...

You don't get blue tits in Australia, do you..??? I heard they are spread as far East as Japan... or that might be the great tit... one of the two. People from America always think I'm joking when I talk about birds that are called tits, well it's not my fault our ancestors came up with that name is it!

Awesome Annie... I love what you share of your feathered and furry friends.

I hope you're enjoying all their babies now.
